The 1973/74 season was the 101st season of competitive football in Scotland and the 77th season of Scottish league football.
IAyr United had a vastly improved season finishing in a superb 7th position. The season had started with two pre-season tours, one to Canada where United scored 27 goals in four matches and the second was to the St Lorient tournament in France which Ayr won with three superb victories.
There was another venture into the Texaco Cup with another two legged defeat against Peter Shilton’s Leicester City.
Two good Cup wins were recorded at Cowdenbeath (first match ever on a Sunday for Ayr) and at Stranraer where huge away support from Ayr gave Stranraer a record attendance.
