The 1968/69 season was the 96th season of competitive football in Scotland and the 72nd season of Scottish league football.
It was also the season that saw Ayr United bounce back to Division One finishing second behind Motherwell.
The season began with a few pre-season friendlies aginst English side Halifax Town earning only a draw for Ayr, but there was a 7-3 win over Vale of Leven.
The season was notable for some large wins such as the 7-1 against Stenhousemuir in October and 6-1 wins in late November and early December against East Stirling and Brechin City although there was a surprising 5-1 defeat at home against ‘The Spiders’ of Queens Park.
A promising sign of what was to come was a good Ayrshire Cup win over rivals Kilmarnock.
