The 2017-18 season was the 121st season of competitive football and the the 103rd competitive league season competed by Ayr United which saw them win the League 1 title.
The season saw Ayr United win their first League Championship in 21 years on the last day after defeating Albion Rovers at Somerset Park and Alloa Athletic unexpectedly hold Raith Rovers to a draw at Starks Park.
This was also the first season in over 80 years that Ayr won a title at home too.
The League season began with a lot of goals away to Albion Rovers when Ayr won 5-1, with Craig Moore getting the first hat-trick of the season. This was followed by victories at home to Forfar Athletic and away to Stranraer.
Ayr's first league defeat came on home soil when Arbroath came from behind to win 2-1, this was followed by Ayr's first away loss of the season when title rivals Raith Rovers with Lawrence Shankland scoring the opening goal on his debut for the club, however Raith went on to score two more and win 2-1. Following the defeat to Raith,
Ayr went on to go 13 games unbeaten in all competitions ending with a defeat away to Airdrieonians just before Christmas.
Raith Rovers and Ayr United vied for top spot for the rest of the season until that fateful last day battle which gave Ayr that one point advantage over Rovers.
