The 2016-17 season was the 120th season of competitive football and the the 102nd competitive football season in Ayr United's history.
They began the season in the Championship looking for survival as a major aim in season after winning promotion via the Play-Offs the previous season.
A revised league Cup bringing back the old mini-leagues brought Ayr into a section with Premier leasgue Hamilton Academical, Championship clubs St Mirren and Livingston and Edinburgh City who had just gained promotion into League 2 from the Lowland league, part of the new Scottish pyramid structure.
An 8-0 win against Gretna in the Raydale Cup did not signal a successive season for Ayr although there were good results early in the Championship season. However despite good wins later in the season too many points were lost and the Honest Men settled into last place and relegation.
