The 2005/06 season was the 109th season of competitive football in Scotland
Robert Conner managed to find some better results from the players and with very limited resources sought to maximise what he had.
Despite this the team were not playing well and squandered a number of valuable points with careless performances which left them 15 points off the play off places. Positive performances saw a 6-0 victory in October at Dumbarton and 4-0 away win at Alloa Athletic.
United also secured an exhilarating 5-4 win at Dumbarton late on in the season but before that was a devastating loss of five goals at Stirling.
The season was also the one and only season where Ayr United and Gretna played league football together.
Their dilemma was emphasised starkly by being by passed by Gretna for promotion, a team in only their second season in the league and already on its second successive promotion, although subsequent seasons showed how costly this was for Gretna.
