The 1998/99 season was the 102nd season of Scottish league football.
Gordon Dalziel took the club on a pre-season tour of Sweden which got the season off to a nice start although United won only one of their four matches.
However the competitive season was one that was dominated in the league by newly relegated Hibernian and meant that Ayr United were playing for a second place at best. Highlight was a 7-1 win over Stranraer at Ayr in September and a 5-0 victory against Hamilton Academical in December.
Two 2-1 defeats against top of the table rivals Falkirk and Clydebank in quick succession in April meant that Ayr had to settle for third place four points behind Falkirk.
A League Cup quarter final defeat by Rangers in September left centre stage to the Scottish Cup.
What a centre stage that was with Ayr knocking local rivals Kilmarnock out of the cup for the second successive season, this time by a staggering 3-0.
Eventually Ayr secumbed to premier league Dundee United, but only after a second match and after United having missed a penalty in the later stages of the match at Somerset Park.
