The 1994/95 season was the 98th season of Scottish league football. This season saw the introduction of a fourth tier of league football (the Scottish 3rd Division) and also three points for a win being awarded instead of just two.
1994/95 saw an early defeat by East Fife and the fans were voicing their opinions already. Later wins helped the mood, but further defeats saw further outbursts from fans and even the local travel club leads referring to him as ‘living in cloud cuckoo land’.
As the financial plight of the club hit home, the signs of disaster that showed during season 1993/94 manifested themselves in dramatic style as Ayr United suffered relegation slipping into the third tier of Scottish Football under the hapless efforts of Manager Simon Stainrod.
It was during Stainrods stewardship that Ayr United used their highest number of ‘non-Scottish’ players in a match. That match was the game against St.Mirren on 5th November, 1994, when a 1-0 defeat was suffered. They were Niclas Nylen (Swedish), Claudio Valetta (Italian), Franck Rolling (French), Bruce Murray (American) and Regis Gorgues (French).
High scoring defeats were the order of the day for the Honest Men.
The only good news on the horizon was that in October 1994, Barr Holdings, whose Chairman Bill Barr was a former club secretary, bought a majority interest in the club and began the arduous task of turning around the clubs’ finances.
Rumours that Bill Barr had only bought the club to sell it of for house building land were soon proved to be false and a new era was about to dawn at Somerset
