The 1986/87 season was the 90th season of competitive football in Scotland.
The return of Ally McLeod brought about a return in Ayr’s fortunes although season 1986/87 was not to be the expected immediate return to the 1st division. A defeat by Stirling Albion at Somerset Park on the last day of the season scuppered United’s promotion dream.
It has to be said that had Ayr been promoted that season with that last gasp win, it would have deprived Ayr United supporters of the sensational season that was about to be unleashed on them the following season.
Even as the Ayr United players left the field that fateful last day there was an air of what was to come
