The 1981/82 season was the 109th season of competitive football in Scotland and the 85th season of Scottish league football.
A 6th place was all that Willie McLean’s Ayr could manage.
There was a sensational 5-1 away win at Partick Thistle in the league cup which provided some early hope but the season seemed to turn after being knocked out of the Scottish Cup by lowly Alloa Athletic in February.
Further dropped points in the league after then left United trailing the promotion places by 9 points.
