The 1979/80 season was the 107th season of competitive football in Scotland and the 83rd season of Scottish league football.
Relegation from the Premier League followed by a 4th place in Division 1 and losing Ally McLeod, were bitter pills to swallow for Ayr and they began the new season determined to regain that status.
However, new manager Willie McLean did a good job to steady the ship but dropping 7 points in the last five matches of the season meant that Ayr finished 3rd missing out on that dream.
