The 1949/50 season was the 77th season of competitive football in Scotland and the 53rd season of the Scottish Football League.
New man Archie Anderson began his first full season in charge and saw United put in some good performances to secure good wins such as a 5-0 beating of Forfar Athletic and 5-3 away to Albion Rovers.
But heavy defeats such as 7-0 against Morton and 4-1 away to Forfar Athletic made life difficult for Ayr and saw them slide to a very poor 13th place in the league.
There was some joy in an Ayrshire Cup two legged victory over Kilmarnock but Ayr were dumped out of the Scottish Cup 4-0 by Dundee United and then lost 7-1 in a admittedly meaningless Stirlingshire Cup match against Stirling Albion.
There was a first meeting with Newcastle United for charity fundraisng.
