Manager Alex Gibson struggled to maintain Ayr United’s first division status, surviving by just two points.  There were some heavy defeats early in the season such as an 8-1 loss to Falkirk and 7-0 defeat to Celtic in November.

However there were some good wins like the 5-1 win over Queens Park in September.

Towards the end of the year and into January results took a turn for the worse and following an 8-0 defeat away to Albion Rovers in January 1935, United’s first division survival look extremely fragile.  Gibson resigned on the following Monday and Frank Thompson was appointed as manager.

Results didn't immediately improve but United did manage to finish in 18th position a mere two points from relegation despite a 3-2 defeat by Airdrie on the last day of the season.

Ayr Unitesd did have the pleasure of Manchester City’s visit to Somerset Park for Bob Hepburn’s testimonial.
